To my friends and neighbors,
It has been an honor to serve Des Moines as one of your councilmembers these past three years. Even before the 2017 election, I have been working tirelessly for the interests of our city … for our businesses, our residents and our collective vision. While it has been no small personal sacrifice, I have found it completely worthwhile and an honor in helping move our city forward … as a community to prosper, protect and position our town for the great future before us. It is no secret this past year has been exceedingly difficult dealing with major issues such as COVID-19, social injustice and unrest, and so much uncertainty. Yet the work of trying to accomplish our goals for the Marina, Downtown, Redondo, Pacific Highway amongst so many others goes on. As we enter 2021, I can’t emphasis enough how important this next election will be toward the future of our town. We will need councilmembers who possess common sense, realistic views and vision that represent our city and its residents and not an outside agenda.
As your councilmember, I have met my commitments and promises of my first term. I have never missed a council or committee meeting, major event, nor regional responsibility during my tenure … as to ensure the best interests of Des Moines are always represented locally and regionally. I have remained accessible, willing to listen and discuss the issues, taken the time to inform and explain the particulars of any city related subject with anyone. I have and will continue to advocate for as many residents and businesses as I can with their needs and concerns. I have demonstrated sound judgement. I research issues and come prepared for all meetings and aspire to stay well informed to ensure I always bring a calm, sensible influence for our city’s benefit.
Throughout my life, I have served the community wherever I call home: as a Veteran of the US Army; as a Volunteer Firefighter; as a Fire Commissioner; as the Waterland Parade Chair; as a Councilmember and now as your Deputy Mayor. Both my wife Bev and I continue to volunteer and donate our time and money to various community groups and charities. My background of experiences in business, development including environmental concerns, and management have provided a great foundation to understand the multiple facets and complexities of municipal policy and process. This is not meant to boast, but simply to summarize a pattern of community service and understanding that is walked, rather than just talked.
2021 will be an election year for our council and much is at stake. I will not sugarcoat the fact that consistent and well-grounded leadership will be an absolute must for Des Moines as we move forward. I believe I offer that to our community through a position on our city council.
I will continue to focus on 4 key issues:
Maintain Fiscal Discipline to ensure our city has the best credit ratings and well positioned to fund our key developments: Marina, Redondo, Downtown, Pacific Highway, Road Improvements, Safe Routes to Schools, Infrastructure, Neighborhood Integrity, etc.
Support Our Businesses and Encourage Beneficial Development – Promote and Encourage residents to shop and dine locally throughout our town. Encourage and support current business owners while looking for other opportunities for new businesses to find a home in Des Moines. Lobby for development that will bring benefit to our community.
Public Safety and Emergency Management – Support and Preserve our Police, Public Works and Parks Departments. Support our Des Moines Police and their efforts to be on the leading edge of modern-day law enforcement and crime prevention while ensuring transparency and adequate funding to do so. Work with City Staff, Fire and Police to ensure we are doing all we can to support and protect our residents, especially during times of emergency such as we face today.
Quality of Life – Continue to improve our parks and open spaces. Support Policy that benefits the residents and their safety both personally and property wise. Lead efforts to build community. Invite and Encourage all our residents to be part of our beloved town. Find ways to connect neighborhoods and people with their passions that benefit them and Des Moines.
In conclusion, I can’t emphasize enough how much I will need your support in 2021 whether it be financially, placing a sign in your yard or just simply telling others about me.
Understanding these are trying times, a contribution of any amount will be especially appreciated for the mailers, postage, media boosted posts, video production, information cards and signage. A contribution of $1000 will pay for signs or a portion of mailers. $500 will pay for my doorbell cards. $250 will pay for boost on social media post. $100 will pay for the small intangibles like postage or meet and greet meetings. But a contribution of any amount will be deeply appreciated and will be put to good use.
